To qualify as a Certified Board, a majority of the board members must have completed the Certified Board Member (CBM) Program in effect at the time of their election and must have satisfied the annual renewal requirements (18 points). The CBM Program is designed for individual board members and effective November 2004, requires a minimum of 96 points in 12 core curricular areas. The number of points required for each curricular area of the CBM Program are specified below:

| 7 | points for completion of the FSBA Policy Governance training module |
| 7 | points for completion of the FSBA Personnel and Bargaining Issues training module |
| 12 | points in Curriculum and Instruction |
| 12 | points in State/Federal Legislative and Administrative Processes |
| 12 | points in School Law |
| 8 | points in Planning Overview |
| 6 | points in Communications/Public Relations |
| 3 | points in Community and Family Involvement |
| 3 | points in Current Trends and Issues |
| 2 | points Elective (any curricular area). |
Three (3) points must be completed in multicultural/diversity (applicable in any curricular area).
